I OPENED A COFFEE SHOP IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC. AND, IT WASN'T BY CHOICE. IN FACT, IT ALMOST DIDN'T HAPPEN AT ALL BECAUSE OF IT.
BUT, BEFORE WE OPENED I WAS DESPERATELY IN SEARCH OF WAYS TO SERVE CUSTOMERS BETTER, ALONGSIDE OUR ENVIRONMENT AS WELL.
PART OF THE OVERALL SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE STRATEGY WAS TO DIVERT ALL FOOD WASTE AND PACKAGING (CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE CUPS, FOOD TRAYS & LIDS, SLEEVES, NAPKINS, AND STRAWS) FROM LANDFILLS.
DESPITE THE CIRCUMSTANCES, THIS PROJECT THAT STARTED AS ONLY A SMALL IDEA COMPOSTED NEARLY 1 TON (2,000 POUNDS) OF ORGANIC & COMPOSTABLE WASTE.
THIS TOLD ME SOMETHING - EVERYONE CAN DO THEIR PART TOO. SEE, APPROXIMATELY 1 POUND OF FOOD PER PERSON IS WASTED IN THE U.S., EVERY DAY. THIS EQUATES TO 103 MILLION TONS (81.4 BILLION POUNDS) OR 40% OF THE OVERALL FOOD SUPPLY.
SO, I DECIDED TO START THIS PROJECT IN AN EFFORT TO HELP SIMPLIFY EVERYDAY SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES, WITHOUT THE WORKLOAD OF FINDING THE SCARCE RESOURCES FOR COMPOSTING FOOD WASTE THAT WOULD OTHERWISE END UP IN A LANDFILL.
